چکیده

The breeding biology of a captive, isolated population Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) at theShanghaiZoo,China, was studied from 2007 to 2019. age the estimated three four years old, and they started in late October or early November. clutch size varied between one two eggs per nest, were 83.2 ±4.8 mmin length, 55.6 ±2.9 breadth 136.1 ±21.5 gin weight. fertility fluctuated slightly, with an average rate 38.7% ± 9.7%, but remained consistently low. survival chicks substantially 0% 100%, 68.6% 27.6%. averaged values observed heterozygosity, expected heterozygosity polymorphism information content 0.468, 0.465 0.446, respectively. It indicated that had low genetic diversity. There significant change index compared recorded 40 ago, which indicates inbreeding depression has occurred this small, isolated, captive Pelicans. These results can be used improve management captivity.

The captive husbandry and reproduction of the pink-eared turtle (Emydura victoriae) at Perth Zoo.

In 1997, Perth Zoo acquired six pink-eared turtles (Emydura victoriae) from the wild for display in the reptile facility. There is very little documented information on pink-eared turtles in captivity. This article looks at the reproductive biology, ecology, behavior, diet, and captive husbandry of the species. Eight clutches of eggs were documented over a 2-year period with an average clutch s...

Integrating evolution in the management of captive zoo populations

Both natural animal populations and those in captivity are subject to evolutionary forces. Evolutionary changes to captive populations may be an important, but poorly understood, factor that can affect the sustainability of these populations. The importance of maintaining the evolutionary integrity of zoo populations, especially those that are used for conservation efforts including reintroduct...

How Abnormal Is the Behaviour of Captive, Zoo-Living Chimpanzees?

BACKGROUND Many captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) show a variety of serious behavioural abnormalities, some of which have been considered as possible signs of compromised mental health. The provision of environmental enrichments aimed at reducing the performance of abnormal behaviours is increasing the norm, with the housing of individuals in (semi-)natural social groups thought to be the m...

Captive Breeding and Gene Banks

Today, our planet is in a state of crisis and many of its natural resources have been destroyed by human activities. One of the principle aims of conservation biology is to promote concrete management programs to limit any further increase in the number of extinct and threatened species and ecosystems. Different approaches may be followed to maintain the world’s biodiversity: the in situ approa...
